5 DAY TOUR
E a s t C o a s t R i f t V a l l e y
This is an ideal route for anyone with a few days to explore the quietest corner of Taiwan in between the pacific cities of Taitung and Hualien. An area not often visited by ‘weigouren’ (foreigners), the incredibly scenery, gentle beaches and quiet roads make it an exceptional area for a few days of magical cycling.
DAY 1
Transfer to Taitung + ride to Chenggong
Leaving early in the morning from Taipei, you’ll arrive in Taitung in time for a quick lunch before you begin the afternoon’s ride along the pristine pacific coastline. There’s plenty to see along the way, including Jialulan Cultural park which runs along the water’s edge just north of Taitung, and then also ‘Water Running Uphill’…the name very much says it all! You’ll spend the night in the small fishing village of Chenggong, where fresh swordfish sashimi and a host of other fresh seafood is the speciality for dinner.
Distance: 54km
Total Elevation: 460m
DAY 2
Chenggong - Ruisui
Continuing north, you’ll spend the first half of the ride tracking the wonderful coastline, which is dotted with various sights and attractions. Sanxiantai Bridge, Baixan Caves and the Tropic of Cancer monument await, before you then turn inland and climb over the spectacular Haian ridge. At the foot of the climb is the small village of Ruisui, nestled in the foothills of the rift valley and famous for its natural hot springs….it also has one of our favourite restaurants on the whole island!
Distance: 74km
Total Elevation: 923m
DAY 3
Ruisui - Hualien
While day two was dominated by the cool azure blues of the pacific ocean, day 3 is all about the thick, luscious greens of the paddyfields and surrounding jungle that encase the rift valley. You’ll ride north along one of the most beautiful roads on the whole island, gliding between the rice farms, banana plantations, and small local communities that live off the valley’s rich volcanic soil. Finally at the north end of the valley you’ll reach Hualien, the gateway to northern Taiwan and home to the island’s biggest night market.
Distance: 77km
Total Elevation: 740m
DAY 4
Liyu Lake Rest Day
Nestled in the foothills of the imposing central mountain range, Liyu Lake lies just inland from Hualien, around 150m above sea level. On a good day locals will flock to the calm shores of Liyu to enjoy a picnic of ‘baoxi’ and ‘fantuan’ or to take out a rowing boat or pedalo. A short ride from the city, the route will take you out through the small vegetable plots to the north of the city and back in along the dedicated bike path that runs along the coast. If you like your guide can prepare a picnic for you to enjoy by the lake as you dip your feet in the cool waters.
DAY 5
Taroko Gorge & Transfer to Taipei
One of the most beautiful roads in the world, no cycling trip in Taiwan should miss the opportunity of riding up through the lower section of Taroko Gorge. Flanked on either side by sheer marble cliffs, the road winds its way up through the gorge to the town of Tianxiang and Xiangde Temple. Having taken in the views and explored a few of the mountain trails, our guide will then drive you back down and north back to Taipei for the end of your trip.
Distance: 37km
Total Elevation: 940m
Departure
Once in Taipei we will arrange transport to the airport in time for your departing flight.
Leaving with some life-long cycling memories!

Just returned from a week long cycling holiday with Rob from Pedal Taiwan. I can't praise Rob and his team enough! Initially I thought the itinerary was overly ambitious - but it was perfect. He catered well for cyclists of variable ability and looked after the welfare of everyone on tour. He encourgaed me to complete the final 10k climb of the Taiwan KOM - the most gruelling 86k imaginable. He was highly organised and had a good knowledge of everything Taiwanese. I would not think twice about organising another tour with him. Thank you Rob for an unbelievable and life-changing experience.VerifiedHurlo2024-04-07Outstanding! Thanks guys!VerifiedLeeNClarke2024-04-07Great trip in a beautiful cycling country I completed the Feb/Mar 2024 KOM Tour with 6 other tour riders. It was easy to see the work that had been put in by the Pedal Taiwan team beforehand in selecting routes, sights, rest and refuel spots, and accommodation. The hotels were all great, especially the smaller, regional places. The execution of the planned tour is where it really shone. Greg, the tour lead/mechanic/van driver/main trouble-shooter, and Frank, the riding lead, were fantastic. Their professional and friendly manner, and their pride in showing their beautiful country, its people, scenery, history and cuisine, was evident at every minute. They really made it a pleasure to be a tour participant. Taiwan is a beautiful country with friendly people and delicious cuisine. Pedal Taiwan and their staff ensured I enjoyed every minute. I would happily commit to another of their tours in the future.VerifiedIan B2024-04-06Pedal Taiwan is the best We had a 5 day ride through Taiwan.
